Helpful Stats & Facts For Betting On Boxing
Whenever you bet on boxing (or any sport), it always helps to go into things with a spreadsheet full of stats. These will help you place better, more informed bets.
- I’ve picked out a few, but I recommend that you find some of your own, too:
- In his last WBC heavyweight championship victory over Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury threw 2x punches than Wilder
- Out of his 267 punches thrown, 82 landed, and 58 were power punches
- Current World Heavyweight Champion, Anthony Joshua, has won 22 of his 23 fights
- Around 50% of boxing matches end with either a knockout (KO) or a technical knockout (TKO)
- That also means that around half of all fights “go the distance’ (12 rounds)
- The favorite wins around 80% of the time
The Most Popular Types of Boxing Bets
Before you place a bet, you need to know what type of boxing bet is going to suit you most. Here are the most popular types of boxing wagers:
Outright Winner
This is the most popular bet of all because it’s the simplest: All you need to do is bet on who you think will win the contest outright. It doesn’t matter what the method of victory is. All that matters is that they win.
Go The Distance
Not all fights go the distance, which means they don’t always go right to the final second of the final round.
In fact, as mentioned earlier, only 50% of fights go the distance.
As such, this is a 50/50 bet whereby you can give yourself the edge by doing some research beforehand.
Over/Under Rounds
Over/under bets are popular in all sports. In boxing, they apply to the number of rounds you think a fight will contain,
For example, you might put money on over 7.5 rounds or under 9.5 rounds. The odds will, of course, vary according to levels of probability determined by the bookie. Overall, though, there’s often lots of value to be found in this type of bet because it’s not always that difficult to predict the number of rounds if you do your due diligence beforehand.
Method of Victory
A few different ways a boxer can win a fight, which helps this type of bet add a bit of “spice” to your evening’s entertainment.
Moreover, it’s a bet that comes with a fairly good payout if you get it right.
Ground Round Wagering
This is a really fun bet that, again, requires some research on your part beforehand.
Essentially, you’re betting which fighter will win a specific group of rounds – the first 3 rounds, round 4-6, and so on.
Boxing Betting Strategy
In this section, I’m going to share a boxing betting strategy that I personally use with you, which has brought my good results over the years.
Please note, though, that past profits never guarantee future wins.
Hedge a Boxing Match
I hedge boxing matches often.
Why?
Because it can be very profitable in the long-term.
In this instance, hedging is when you back one boxer to win via knockout and another boxer to win via points.
How do you know which boxers to back for which type of victory?
Simple: Go with the punchers for the knockout (because they’re more aggressive) and the “pure” boxers/fighters for the points.
Naturally, you need to find value when shopping around for your odds. But let me give you an example.
Back in 2015, when Floyd Mayweather took on his South American compatriot, Manny Pacquiao, a betting site that I used offered Floyd Mayweather to win via KO or TKO at 6.9, and Pacquiao to win on points at 1.840.
So what did I do?
I backed both outcomes in such a way that I was guaranteed to make a profit if either one came through.
Naturally, I would have lost if – for example – Floyd Mayweather won on points or Manny won by KO or TKO. But I took the risk after doing my research and analyzing both fighters and their styles and strategies. After I did that, I came to the conclusion that the method of victory would be either of the ones I chose.
This is called hedging, and it requires you to place two bets based on judgment and research. The aim is to reduce risk. If one of them comes through, you’ll be in profit. If neither comes through, you need to fine-tune your research and go again with the next fight.
Top Tips For Betting On Boxing
I’d like to expand on my strategy by giving you some top tips that will help you place better bets.
Understand Scoring
Understanding scoring will give you a huge advantage when weighing up your next bet. This is because lots of boxing matches go the distance and therefore come down to the scoring system. If you can grasp how this system works, you will win more bets.
Take Injuries Into Account
Injuries matter in all sports – and especially in boxing.
What matters more, though, is where you get your injury information from.
For example, if a boxer plays down a past injury before a fight, can you really believe him? It’s the same if he plays it up. He could just as well be trying to fool his opponent.
Look At The Training Partners
A great way to gauge how a fighter will perform is by looking at his training partners. If he’s working with an awesome, experienced coach, his chances of success surely increase.
If, on the other hand, he’s sparring with average fighters, it’s not going to give him the edge he wants.
Don’t Fall Into The Cycle Of Betting The Favorite All The Time
One of the problems recreational bettors have is that they get sucked into always backing the favorite. They do this because they see it as a way to make easy, quick money.
But as we know, the favorite doesn’t always win.
That’s not to say you should never back the favorite. But you need to be careful with your timing, and you should never back them with your entire bankroll.
Always Have a Plan
Understand why you place a bet. Never place a bet just for the sake of placing a bet. Don’t bet impulsively. Each bet must be clearly thought out.

Final Word On Boxing Betting
Now that you know how to bet on boxing, the next step is to pick a sportsbook that’s right for you. Then, grab the welcome bonus, take a look at upcoming fights, and prepare your next boxing bets based on this article’s advice.
Don’t forget to let me know how you get on in the comments!
The sweet science and boxing betting in general has found its popularity dwindle in recent years, mainly due to the rise of MMA and MMA betting. Boxing used to be many bettors sport of choice with fan favourites such as Muhammad Ali (seen on right), Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya generating tons of interest when they would take a fight. That being said it is still very possible to bet on a wide variety of boxing fights online.

How to Bet on Boxing
Boxing betting is very simple, you just wager on who you think will win the fight. This form of boxing betting is known as money line betting, which is usually the only form of boxing betting you can find at online sportsbooks these days. Some bookies, such as Bet365, our recommended bookmaker for boxing bets, also offer prop bets for some of the higher profile fights.
Boxing Money Line Betting
Money line betting is often the only option for bettors wishing to bet on boxing matches. With a money line bet you simply bet on which fighter will win the match and your potential winnings are determined by the odds associated with each fighter. Bets on the favorite will obviously payout less than the same bets on the underdog. Here is an example:
Manny Pacquiao +115
Floyd Mayweather JR -145
Online Boxing Betting Usa
If this fight were to have happened Pacquiao would have beeen a slight underdog and a wager of $100 on Pacquiao would have won $115 for a total payout of $215 if Pacquiao were to have won the fight. Mayweather, on the other hand is the favourite and to win $100 betting on Mayweather you would have had to wager $145.
Boxing betting is a straight forward as it gets. Place a wager on which boxer you think will win the match and if their arm is raised after the bout your bet is a winner.
Boxing Prop Betting
Online Boxing Betting
Bet365 seems to be the only online bookmaker offering any form of boxing prop bets at the moment. Some prop bets for boxing include how the fight is finished, which round the fight finishes in, who wins a specific round and so on.
